| Important notice:
|Hikers please note: the entire San Gorgonio Wilderness is currently closed to the public due to a wildfire. You can track the status of this here: https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/closures/5900/
If the Wilderness is not re-opened by Wednesday, July 25, then we're going to cancel the hike. Please consider sending hike leader Matthew Bokach an email at email@example.com so that he can reach out to you directly.
Gorgonio is the highest peak in Southern California at 11,503 feet above sea level. This will be an extremely challenging but fulfilling day! We’ll be hiking the Vivian Creek trail, which is the steepest but also the shortest option for reaching the summit. The round-trip is 17.3 miles with a total elevation gain of 5,840 feet.
Some excellent detailed descriptions of the trail, including photos, can be found on SoCalHiker.net and ModernHiker.com.
Schedule: We’ll meet at the trailhead at 7:00 am. The early start time is meant to accommodate slower hikers who might need more than the estimated 10 hours to complete this hike. (Sunset is at approximately 8:00 pm.)
Trip Leader: Matthew Bokach (firstname.lastname@example.org)
Permits: The San Bernardino National Forest requests that all hikers fill out and carry a Wilderness Permit. The trip leader will have blank permits available at the trailhead. Group sizes in the Wilderness cannot exceed 12 people and apparently volunteers check compliance along the trail. Contact Matthew Bokach at email@example.com with any questions.
What to bring: Especially on a long, remote, and challenging hike like this one, hikers are strongly encouraged to bring the "ten essentials" listed here: https://www.greatoutdoorsla.org/page-18105
Directions: From I-10, take Exit 80 for University Avenue, and turn north. (If coming from the east, turn left onto Citrus Ave. at the end of the ramp, then take the first right turn onto University Avenue). Continue for 1 mile, and then turn right onto Lugonia Ave. (CA-38). Continue east for 20 miles, passing the Mill Creek Ranger Station on the right after 9 miles. After 20 miles, take the right turn for Valley of the Falls Road. Continue east for 4 miles until you reach the entrance for Big Falls Picnic Area. You can find parking for the trailhead at the eastern end of the picnic area near the Vivian Creek Trailhead. All parked vehicles must display an Adventure Pass.
