We are cancelling this Saturday's scheduled hike to the summit of Mt. San Gorgonio. The closure order on the entire San Gorgonio Wilderness states that it will last until the Valley Fire is fully out. The most recent update on the status of the Valley Fire (https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/5900/) indicates it is still burning and makes a reference to smoke being visible for "possibly weeks." Taken together, these two pieces of information make it clear that the closure order in the Wilderness is not going to be lifted by this Saturday.
We will continue monitoring information related to the Valley Fire in hopes that the closure order is lifted before our hike to the summit of Mt. San Bernardino, scheduled for Sep. 30.
Those of you who are registered for the SoCal Six Pack of Peaks Challenge have probably seen that the organizers changed the list of qualifying peaks last week, in response to the closure of the San Gorgonio Wilderness. The new list adds Mt. Baden-Powell (which had already been an alternate for Mt. Wilson) and Ontario Peak. So our cancellation of this hike won't affect your ability to complete the Six Pack.
